Fabulous Dance Festival Writing!

The Dance Night

Wow, I felt nervous when we did our dance at Karamu.  I was smiling at my mum and brother and my mum took some videos.  I was dressed up with a white top with some big dots on it. They were black.  My favourite dance was the Hokey Tokey because we had to turn around. I like Mrs Riley's costume.  It was a bear and Mrs Mueller was a colourful parrot.  I loved watching all of the dances.  It was a fun night.

We marched into Karamu High School hall.  I was feeling excited and I dressed up as a Spring lady because I had my Spring dress and jacket.  My favourite dances were the Troika and the Locomotion because as the end of The Locomotion we sang, "Let's make a chain now, c'mon baby," and then we froze.  It was a great night!

For a few weeks Room 1 and Room 3 have been practicing our 4 dances for the dance festival.  We have been practicing The Locomotion and the Troika, the Hokey Tokey and So Long Farewell.  My favourite was the Locomotion because the lady who sings it has a nice voice.  I like the part where it goes like this, "I think you got the knack, oh, oh."
By Marcus

Wow!  I was nervous when we marched inside Karamu School hall.  I was dressed up like the Queen.  My dress was pink and my tiara was silver.  My favourite dance was So Long Farewell because I like that song and I could see my mum.
By Ashanti

Last exciting night I was excited because I could not wait!  When we walked in we did the Grand March.  We did 4 fantastic dances.  My favourite dance was The Locomotion because we did the triangle.  Mrs Mueller was a very colourful parrot.  Mrs McFadyen was a crocodile.  I was Aladdin.  It was great!
By Benji

When I was getting ready for the dance festival I was nervous because there was going to be 400 people there.  When we got to the hall at Karamu School we marched around the hall and waved.  My favourite dance was...The Locomotion.  We did a little bit of Jump jam moves, like the scissors.  I was dressed as a ballerina.  Everyone looked fantastic.  Mrs Blakesley was an Indian - Pocahontas.  Mrs McFadyen was a crocodile, snap, snap!  For The Locomotion, I was one of the leaders.  So was Niamh and Raiha and Tyler too.  I had so so so much fun because I love dancing all the time.  We danced to the Hokey Tokey.  Mrs Riley was a brown bear and Mr Wright was a black bear.  Mrs Mueller was a colourful parrot.  I had a great night!
By Maia

Vroom, Vroom went the car on the way to the Dance Festival.  In the car I was nervous because there was over 400 mums and dads at Karamu school.  My favouite dance was the Troika.  I liked Mrs Blakesley's costume and I wore my best clothes.
By Isaac

Our Dance Festival was last night.  I really liked The Locomotion because I like pretending to be a train.  My Nanny and Mum watched me.  It was so fun!
By Terrell

Wow.  I felt nervous when I marched inside Karamu school hall.  My sister said to me, "Do your best."  I said, "Of course I will because I know how to do it off by heart."  We did four dances.  My favourite dance was The Locomotion because we grabbed onto each other's shoulders and we counted in our head, "one, two three, kick," and at the end we said, "Come on, Come on, do the locomotion with me!  And then we froze.  Then we waved our arms in the air.  I was pretending to be a movie star!
By Niamh

Last night there were over 400 people
watching the dance festival. I was so nervous.  I saw my mum taking photos of the dances.  I loved the Troika and The Locomotion but we did 4 dances. I got a dance programme.  It showed the songs and dances for all the classes.  I loved the book.  It was an awesome night!

Vegetable Soup Writing

The clever writers in Room 1 worked on their vegetable soup stories for 2 or 3 days.  They added lots of detail about what they did to make the soup and used sequencing words (e.g. after, then, next) to order their story.  Here are a few for you to read....

On Monday we made vegetable soup.  We had to wash our hands and wash the vegetables because the vegetables had dirt and slime on them.
Next it was my turn to chop with the sharp knife to chop the leeks  and celery.  I got to snap the cauliflower.  It looked like a baby tree.
Finally it was time to cook the soup.  Mrs Blakesley put eight cups of water and some stock.  We tipped the vegetables into the pot and cooked it for a long time until it was mushy and soft. We got to eat the delicious soup and delicious bread.

Have you ever made vegetable soup with your own vegetables?  Room 1 picked our vegetables and made vegetable soup on Monday.
First we peeled the heavy parsnip.  It was very hard to peel because it was  a bit lumpy.  The parsnip peelings looked like humongous chunks of cheese.  When I tried it, it tasted like melted carrot.  When we peeled the slippery potato it was hard because it had such hard skin and I had to keep picking it up because it slipped out of my hand.  The grater sounded like motorbike's engine.  When we finally got enough we put it in the enormous pot.  It was almost overflowing with vegetables.  The we put the lovely vegetable stock in as well.  The stock is as good as the vegetables and it gives the water flavour.
Then we left it for three hours and the next day we ate it and it was delicious.

I have made vegetable soup, have you?
On Monday we made some in Room 1.
First we harvested the vegetables from the garden. There was cauliflower, leeks, celery, cabbage, rainbow silverbeet, kumura and carrot.
Next we grated the carrot.  I got carrot juice in my eye when it flicked in my eye.  After that we peeled the carrot. It looked like a long orange stick but it was slippery.  The rainbow silverbeet was colourful.
After that we sat on the mat and Mrs Blakesley chose who could put some stock in.  Raiha put in some and Finley did. Finally we cooked it.
The next day we made bread to go with our soup and then it was ready to eat because the vegetables were soft.
When we ate it, it was burning on my tongue but it was delicious!

Have you made vegetable soup before?  On Monday we made vegetable soup in Room 1.
First we had to peel the slippery parsnip and I could hear scraping from the peeler.  It looked like a white carrot. Then we had to peel the lumpy potato and it looked like a head with no hair or eyes or nose or mouth.  The spots on the potato looked like freckles.  When we were grating the parsnip and potatoes we had to be careful of our fingers. After we finished grating I tasted the parsnip and it tasted like carrot.  Finally we put the veges into the pot with some vege stock to cook.  We had to cook it for 3 hours so we wouldn't have big chunks of veges.  It was cooking all day and it smelled delicious.  I couldn't wait to eat it I thought. Then the next day came and it was ready to eat.  It was so delicious.  I loved making vegetable soup.

On Monday we washed our hands and then Mrs McFadyen washed the celery and the leeks.  We were making vegetable soup.  Finley chopped the leeks first then I chopped them.  They were slippery.  Finley held them really still and then I cut them hard.  I was about to go to sleep but I didn't - I kept on doing cutting.
We put the veges in the pot.  Then we put stock in and then we cooked it for a long time.
The next day we all ate the soup with a spoon. We had bread too.  It was delicious.

Wonderful Weaving

This week we decided to give weaving a try!

Lots of us found it really tricky at first but we showed Determination.  We kept on trying and we didn't give up.

Sadie said, "I found it really hard but in the end I got it because I persevered."

Personal Best!

Determination!

Enjoyment!

We were inspired by Mrs Mueller's wonderful bag!

Frosty Morning Fun

At 9.15am this morning the temperature outside was 1.2 degrees and it was much colder overnight
(-2.8 degrees at 6am)!

We had fun exploring the frosty morning and then describing it in our writing.

The frost is cold and I went on the white grass.  I saw my footprints and it was crunchy.
Written by Terrell

This morning when I went outside I froze.  It was really, really cold.  I couldn't move a muscle!  It was so icy cold that it felt like I was in an ice cube.
Written by Mana

Wow!  What an enormous frost.  At school we played on the frosty, icy ground.  I slipped on the beautiful ice crystals.  It felt very, very cold.  I think if it was a little bit cooler we would have a big blanket of ice.
Written by Maddie

What a frosty morning at school.  I was skidding on the icy tracks and the grass was turning back to normal.  I touched the grass and it was freezing!
Written by Jerome

In the cold morning I got out of my home and went to play on the grass.  It was white and crunchy.  I was freezing and I left my footprints all over the ground.
Written by Erin

Slippery, sliding on the lawn at school!  I was ice skating on the icy, white grass.  I licked a blade of grass and it tasted like water.  I left trails of green grass where ever I went.
Written by Tyler

When I got outside I got a shock!  My lawn was covered in white.  I rolled in it.  It was freezing cold.  I froze to pieces and felt like an ice block.  I screamed and ran inside!

This morning my grass was white.  Brrrrrrrr!  I was cold in the car and I had brain freeze.  It was hurting my brain.  Oh no!

Autumn Writing

We went for an adventure outside to play in the autumn leaves.  We also worked in groups to create a pic collage about Autumn.

Then we used our experience to create some descriptive writing using I see, I hear and I feel...sentence starters.  These pieces have lots of descriptive wow words in them...

I can see beautiful colours on the damp leaves.
I can hear leaves bump into each other when I stomped on them.
I can feel pointy sharp claws on my skin and it was ticklish.
By Keiarliya

I saw leaves all over the wet, green grass.
I saw beautiful orange, red, yellow and brown leaves.
I heard birds singing in the trees.
I felt soft smooth leaves.  They were colourful.
I jumped in the leaves and they were ticklish.
The tree trunks were massive but I got leaves in my long hair.
It was good fun and Finley and I threw leaves at each other.
By Sadie

I see thousands of colourful leaves on the damp grass.
I feel crackly leaves under my shoes.
I hear the leaves shuffling around.
