The Weather Forecast - Tuesday 26th August

We look at the weather forecast every morning in Room 1. We can say what the temperature is in degrees Celsius.  Mrs Blakesley took a screen shot of the weather forecast on Metservice at 8.30am on Tuesday morning.  What is the temperature?  What is the weather forecast?

Sneak Peek!

We have been very busy dancing!  We can't wait to perform our dances.  Our dance evening will be on Tuesday the 9th of September.

We have also been busy doing lots of running to prepare for the school fun run in September.  Running is a great activity to practice at home!  Keep up the great training Room 1!

Vegetable Soup Writing

The clever writers in Room 1 worked on their vegetable soup stories for 2 or 3 days.  They added lots of detail about what they did to make the soup and used sequencing words (e.g. after, then, next) to order their story.  Here are a few for you to read....

On Monday we made vegetable soup.  We had to wash our hands and wash the vegetables because the vegetables had dirt and slime on them.
Next it was my turn to chop with the sharp knife to chop the leeks  and celery.  I got to snap the cauliflower.  It looked like a baby tree.
Finally it was time to cook the soup.  Mrs Blakesley put eight cups of water and some stock.  We tipped the vegetables into the pot and cooked it for a long time until it was mushy and soft. We got to eat the delicious soup and delicious bread.

Have you ever made vegetable soup with your own vegetables?  Room 1 picked our vegetables and made vegetable soup on Monday.
First we peeled the heavy parsnip.  It was very hard to peel because it was  a bit lumpy.  The parsnip peelings looked like humongous chunks of cheese.  When I tried it, it tasted like melted carrot.  When we peeled the slippery potato it was hard because it had such hard skin and I had to keep picking it up because it slipped out of my hand.  The grater sounded like motorbike's engine.  When we finally got enough we put it in the enormous pot.  It was almost overflowing with vegetables.  The we put the lovely vegetable stock in as well.  The stock is as good as the vegetables and it gives the water flavour.
Then we left it for three hours and the next day we ate it and it was delicious.

I have made vegetable soup, have you?
On Monday we made some in Room 1.
First we harvested the vegetables from the garden. There was cauliflower, leeks, celery, cabbage, rainbow silverbeet, kumura and carrot.
Next we grated the carrot.  I got carrot juice in my eye when it flicked in my eye.  After that we peeled the carrot. It looked like a long orange stick but it was slippery.  The rainbow silverbeet was colourful.
After that we sat on the mat and Mrs Blakesley chose who could put some stock in.  Raiha put in some and Finley did. Finally we cooked it.
The next day we made bread to go with our soup and then it was ready to eat because the vegetables were soft.
When we ate it, it was burning on my tongue but it was delicious!

Have you made vegetable soup before?  On Monday we made vegetable soup in Room 1.
First we had to peel the slippery parsnip and I could hear scraping from the peeler.  It looked like a white carrot. Then we had to peel the lumpy potato and it looked like a head with no hair or eyes or nose or mouth.  The spots on the potato looked like freckles.  When we were grating the parsnip and potatoes we had to be careful of our fingers. After we finished grating I tasted the parsnip and it tasted like carrot.  Finally we put the veges into the pot with some vege stock to cook.  We had to cook it for 3 hours so we wouldn't have big chunks of veges.  It was cooking all day and it smelled delicious.  I couldn't wait to eat it I thought. Then the next day came and it was ready to eat.  It was so delicious.  I loved making vegetable soup.

On Monday we washed our hands and then Mrs McFadyen washed the celery and the leeks.  We were making vegetable soup.  Finley chopped the leeks first then I chopped them.  They were slippery.  Finley held them really still and then I cut them hard.  I was about to go to sleep but I didn't - I kept on doing cutting.
We put the veges in the pot.  Then we put stock in and then we cooked it for a long time.
The next day we all ate the soup with a spoon. We had bread too.  It was delicious.

Papier Mache

We have been learning to Papier Mache.  We found out that Papier Mache is a French phrase, meaning 'chewed paper'.
Before we began we ripped up a lot of newspaper and Mrs Blakesley made a lot of paste.

We talked about what we need to do to be successful at Papier Mache.
This is the criteria we came up with:

The paper is not allowed to be dry.
Paste under and over the paper.

Paste one piece of paper at a time.

Make sure there are no gaps.
Make it flat and smooth.
Complete one layer at a time and let it dry.

We can't wait to add more layers next week!  Keep an eye out for our finished projects.

Brianna's Pride Award

Congratulations Brianna for receiving the Pride award this week.  Brianna received her award for the fantastic effort and enthusiasm she gives to all her learning.  She is a kind and caring friend - a great bucket filler!  Well done Brianna.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Benji, Keiarliya and Sam for receiving certificates this week. Well done!

Delicious, Scrumptious Vegetables!

Look at what our tiny seedlings have become!

"A white cauliflower as big as a soccer ball!"

 "Long, green celery.  Yum!"

Ants on logs!  Crunch Crunch!

Cauliflower and dip.  What a treat.

What clever gardeners you are Room 1!

We still have leeks, carrots, cabbage, silverbeet and more celery to harvest.  I wonder what we could make?  What do you think?

Happy Birthday Hunter!

Today we celebrated Hunter's 6th birthday at school.  Hunter's mum made some yummy chocolate All Black cupcakes for Hunter to share with us.  We sung, "Happy birthday to you..." and then Hunter blew out the candles and shared his cupcakes with everyone.  Thank you Hunter.  We hope you have a fantastic birthday!

Surprise

I was playing with my balloon on the ferry and I got a real surprise because I saw Mrs McFadyen. I am going on a holiday to Ashburton and Mrs McFadyen was going to a funeral.
See you when I get back. 😊
